Stevens (Steven) Stunning Reef Tank
1 Introduction
WOW!! is all I can say, never in a million years would I have expected to win TOTM! A big thanks to all who nominated my tank! My tank has been running for nearly two years, all corals were either frags from my old system or swaps from friends, and several rescue corals, i think the red goni is my biggest rescue, I really did not expect that fella to pull round but the change is amazing.

Thanks again and i hope you enjoy my system!

2 System Details
full tankacro islandThe display tank is 5x2x2 with a wier in each corner, the right hand wier, flows in to the sump throught the cheato, then the skim 2, over the baffle and returned to the display, the left hand wier gravity feeds the AP600 skimmer, this is returned into the cheato, then back over and into the display.

The whole system is set up very basicly and so far it seems to work, it is also run on quite a tight budget as my wife really does not share my passion!!

Water is tested regularly, all fluroesent tubes are changed every six months and the halide every 12 months.

Giessemann twin 250wt with x4 55wt T5's the halide bulbs are blv 14.000k. The T5's are a mix of ITC's aqua science and Korallin zuct.

more acrosI also have 2x 42" additional arcadia T8 actinics front and back of the tank.
4 Water Movement
Water is returned from the sump via an ocean runner 3500 and in the main tank there are 2x tunze nano stream 6025s, 2x Maxijet 600 on a natural wave maker and the return from the fluval 205.... that is it! simplicity at its finest!
sump5 Filtration
Filtration consists of 70kg of live rock in the display tank, a 48"x18"x"15 sump tank mainly consisting of cheato which is reverse lit to the display tank.

A Grotech ZEO Reactor with Fauna Marin Ultralith which is pumped twice daily. An additional Fluval 205 external filter containing filter floss and new era carbon is run 24x7.
6 Heating/Cooling
Temperature is controlled via a TR80 chiller with the temperature set at 24. There is also a visitherm 300wt heater controlled via the Aquatronica but it never comes on.

7 Additives
I use brightwell aquatics kalk+2 in my auto top up which is dosed as and when 24x7. I also add tropic marin pro coral A+ and pro coral K+ dosed daily each on alternate days.
ca reactor, top up, aquatronica8 Monitoring
The system is monitored by an Aquatronica, this also controls the heater/top up/solenoid for the calcium reactor, i have had my fair share of troubles with this though!!
9 Feeding
Fish are fed twice daily with a mix of frozen mysis/krill, enriched brine shrimp, and fauna marin colour base pellet. The corals are fed twice weekly using a soup which is a mix of cyclopeze+ultra clam+ultra min f+ rotifers+lobster eggs+red plankton, this is all left to mix and re-hydrate over night and then the tank is fed with the lights off first thing in the morning when the acro's are in fed mode.
10 Maintenance
I perform a 15 gallon water change every week using Aquamedic salt which I add additional magnesium to as it tends to be a little low but all other elements test good, I clean the glass every couple of days, I empty and clean both skimmer cups weekly.

11 Problems
recovering scolyThe biggest problem I have encountered was STN on most of my acro's, after testing all major params all was ok, I started looking in to the flow patteren I had created and all seemed ok, so all else I could think of was minor trace elements, with all the cheato in my sump and the tank being fairly well stocked I assumed that the in take of elements must of been far greater than what I was replacing with water changes, so I started adding TMC pro coral A and K+, each on alternate days, with in a couple off weeks all STN stopped and now new bases have been layed and the sps are going great guns, so all I can assume is that minor trace elements are over looked by a lot of us, and play a very important role. scoly

And ...my yellow tail damsel...a real thorn in my side! this little chap is a real pita!!! he moves in amonst one of my acro's picks a tight cluster of branches to live in and the proceeds to strip the tissue off the underside of them and he calls it home!!!, then decides to move house into another colony and repeats the process!!...can I catch him?....NO!!!!! I have tried every method in the book!...little sod!

Other than that my system has been problem free!

One thing I would not have done if I started over again, I would not put any pulse coral in my tank is it really is becoming a nuisance!! Also I would have scaped my tank slightly different so I could fit more coral in!! Also I would like to redo my sump with more chambers...maybe on the upgrade!!....dont tell my wife!

I'd like to thank all those who see my tank worthy of a tank of the month, it is a great honour. Also my wife Lisa for putting up with me, testing, watching, fiddiling and not paying her enough attention!

My good friend ben, who together we have built cambridge coral tech which is my dream job!... I love it!! And to all my reefkeeping buddies for the hours of phone calls exchanging views and ideas, you're some class guys, you know who you are!

Please leave your comments and questions on the Tank of the Month thread at UltimateReef.com.
